London: Glenmore Suites
While in London, we stayed at the Glenmore Suites in the area of Belsize Park. We wanted a place that felt like home with easy access to transportation. This was the perfect solution for our trip. If you visit their website (www.glenmoresuites.london), we stayed in the one with yellow bulldog pillows and yellow clock on the shelf.
I had compared AirBnB and hotel options but neither seemed right. Affordable AirBnB options were not close to the Tube and hotels didn't feel homey enough. Our flat at Glenmore had a complete kitchen (stove, microwave, fridge) and was furnished with all the utensils, pots, pans and dishes we needed. I especially like the water kettle. Almost every evening we had a piping hot cup of tea or hot chocolate.
Mia, our host was great at demonstrating how everything worked. The UK uses a 240 volt system so there are some differences in the electrical outlets. Each plug has a switch to turn it on or off, so just because the item is plugged in, that does not mean there is power running to it.
We were just a minute walk from the Underground station on the Northern line, one of the few lines that continues to run late into the evening. We also had use of the washer and dryer in the basement. There are long term residents in the building as well, so it truly reminded me of apartment living.
The only downside was that our flat was up three flights of narrow stairs. But then we discovered that almost everything in London is up or down narrow stairs, so it really was not a big deal. Liz was able to sketch the view out the back window and I watched a cat sitting on the roofs across the back yards. We also were able to check out some of the local TV stations and thought that their commercials were certainly different, less pushy.
