Book Review: Geekerella

GeekerellaFor anyone who has ever written fan fiction, attended a convention or binge watched a science-fiction series, Geekerella is a charming treat. While the overall story follows the traditional Cinderella plot, the characters are developed within their own modern universe. This is not a glossed over remake of the Disney version. Poston gives us a lovable prince because he is flawed. Elle's backstory forms the fabric and depth of her character.

The chapters go back and forth between Darien and Elle's perspectives and they do spend a fair amount of time texting back and forth. Neither of these features are my favorite storytelling mechanism but Poston pulls it off well, advancing the story with each narration shift. There is a bit of language that would put this novel in the teen or older range. And as a slow burning love story, there are elements of romance including kissing.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I found myself rooting for Elle and wanting to hate Darien as much as she did. But then after getting to know him, I began hoping that her misunderstanding of him would not become a hindrance to their fragile relationship. Fraught with what could have been and what almost was, the reader discovers that underneath all the cosplay props are fragile hearts filled with hopes and dreams.
