Book Review: The Wendy Project

The Wendy Project I picked this up having just finished a production of Peter Pan Jr, perhaps the fairy dust still lingered in the air. The illustrations also caught my attention. I was drawn to the sketchbook style with watercolor accenting the world of Neverland.

But if you are expecting a bright, happy tromp through a fairy land full of adventure, this graphic novel is not for you. The dark contrast and pain of personal loss provides the backdrop for Wendy's journal. While dying may be a really big adventure, living with death proves much more troublesome.

While middle school students may enjoy this quick read, the setting is high school. The pain and loss expressed may be difficult for young readers to understand or may not be emotionally capable of reconciling. This coming of age tale explores some of the more difficult choices faced when growing up.
