Exploring Science and Math through Music and Messes

OKGoIf you have ever seen a music video by the music group OK Go, you know that they enjoy experimentation and quirky effects. Now all that energy is available for teachers in the classroom, with maybe slightly less mess.

In cooperation with Google and Morton Salt, they have produced a set of three STEM related lesson plans complete with tie-ins to their most popular videos. You can get your hands dirty in this wonderful playground at the OK Go Sandbox.

A few of the features that I find most helpful are the printable lesson plan pdf and the view-able resources. They give students challenges to complete and are careful not to give away the answers, but allow the fun exploration of the challenge to allow students the opportunity to discover answers for themselves.

None of the challenges or educator guides address specific government standards or ages. I would also caution teachers with making them into a whole class exercise unless it ties in well with a unit. They would, however, make great challenges for students who need that extra activity or for someone who enjoy the slightly off beat.
